If You’re Going To The Arctic, Don’t Bother Packing That Bikini!

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Temperatures at the North Pole could reach freezing point, claimed the BBC on Saturday.

In reality temperatures never got higher than about minus 10C. While this was still less cold than usual, it was due to an incursion of milder air from the Atlantic across a very narrow front.

Most of the Arctic was around average at between minus 30C and 40C.

Tone Heller does his usual thorough job debunking the scare stories, and explaining that it is simply a weather event which has regularly happened before.

Hottest Arctic Hype

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

There has been a concerted effort in the last few days to run the latest Arctic scare story, such as this one in the Telegraph:

The Arctic shattered heat records in the past year as unusually warm air triggered massive melting of ice and snow and a late fall freeze, US government scientists said on Tuesday.

The grim assessment came in the Arctic Report Card 2016, a peer-reviewed document by 61 scientists around the globe issued by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The NOAA report covers from October 2015 to September 2016, a period it said the Arctic’s average annual air temperature over land was the highest on record.

The use of the word “heat”, has become prevalent lately, all designed to put slightly warmer weather into a bad light. All I can say to the writer of this article is that…

NOAA forecasts major December cold blast for nearly all the USA

I saw a NOAA report from the winter of 1963 that looked much like this.

Watts Up With That?

Dr. Roger Pielke Sr. Alerts me to this map from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center and says:

Cannot recall last time I have seen such a cold anomaly forecast across almost entire USA.

Neither can I, have a look:

UPDATE: This map from Dr. Ryan Maue of WeatherBell shows that over 75% of the USA will be below freezing for overnight lows on December 8th:

Dr. Maue writes:

CONUS average low temp of 17°F for Dec 8th according to ECMWF 12z is exceptionally cold — there will surely be record lows.

The only state not showing a cold anomaly is Hawaii, the southernmost parts of Florida and Texas are also spared.

The 6-10 day outlook shows the western half of the USA and Alaska in a deep cold anomaly:

Maybe it has something to do with the “cold blob” I pointed out yesterday?
