Hurricane Michael Claims Don’t Stand Up To Scrutiny

While Michael was certainly a disastrous hurricane, three specific claims have been made about it, which don’t stand up to scrutiny:

  • It was the biggest storm on record for the Florida Panhandle
  • It was the third most powerful to hit the US, based on barometric pressure
  • It was the fourth strongest in terms of wind speeds.

    A high level of interest in tropical cyclones derives from an unusually active hurricane season in 2004 when more than 14 tropical cyclones formed in the North Atlantic basin. Four of these storms intensified to Category 4 or greater and made landfall in the USA causing considerable damage. The even more dramatic 2005 season followed in its heels with more than thirty depressions. Four of them intensified to Category 5 and three made landfall. The most intense was Hurricane Wilma but the most spectacular was Hurricane Katrina which made landfall in Florida and again in Louisiana. The ‘Hate’ Police are Now Here

It’s off topic, but important.

Cycling home from St Peters I saw a poster that took my breath away.  Sometimes you see that something is going to happen and yet it still shocks you when it does.  These posters are currently being displayed in towns and cities all over Scotland.

There are others – but it was these that took my breath away –

You will note that these are posters from the Scottish Government and the Scottish Police.   At one level they seem fine.  Who is going to argue against the idea that we want rid of hatred?  That people should not call others names, or be violent, or mock and abuse?   But that is not what is happening here.  Note the following:
